Extension Programs

Williamstown Primary School offers a variety of learning extension programs to cater to the diverse needs and talents of its students.

One notable initiative is the Creative Minds program, designed for Grade 6 students who demonstrate a strong understanding of curriculum concepts and perform above the expected level. This program integrates core curriculum knowledge with advanced ICT skills, utilising a project-based model that emphasises real-world applications and problem-solving. Students engage in challenges and tasks that require self-motivation and effective time management.

In addition to Creative Minds, the school participates in the G.A.T.E.WAYS program, an independent organisation established to provide opportunities for highly able and gifted children. G.A.T.E.WAYS offers programs that challenge students intellectually and help develop their individual talents. Williamstown Primary School allocates four places per year level for this program, aiming to expose a broad range of students to these enriching experiences.

The school is also part of the Victorian High Ability Program (VHAP), which is designed to provide high-achieving students with extra learning opportunities. This program targets students who have demonstrated advanced capabilities in areas such as literacy, numeracy, and general intellectual ability. The VHAP offers specialised, challenging activities and projects that extend their learning beyond the standard curriculum.

It’s important to note that these extension programs are in addition to the school’s commitment to differentiated teaching across all year levels. Differentiation is embedded into the everyday classroom practice, ensuring that all students, regardless of their abilities, are engaged in learning that is suitably challenging. Teachers adapt the curriculum to meet the varying needs of students by providing different pathways, resources, and support, ensuring every child is appropriately extended and supported in their learning journey.

These extension programs, alongside differentiated teaching, are integral to Williamstown Primary School's commitment to fostering a stimulating learning environment that recognizes and nurtures the unique abilities of each student.
