Physical Education

Physical Education Program at Williamstown Primary

At Williamstown Primary, our Physical Education (PE) program is designed to develop students’ physical skills, teamwork, and confidence while fostering a lifelong love of movement and active living. Through engaging lessons and a broad range of activities, we support students in building their fundamental motor skills, game sense, and overall well-being.

Curriculum Overview

Our PE curriculum follows the Victorian Curriculum, ensuring that students progress through key movement and health-related competencies across their primary years. Students engage in:

  • Foundation - Year 2: Fundamental movement skills such as running, jumping, throwing, and catching, as well as introductory games that build coordination and teamwork.
  • Years 3 - 4: Refining movement skills, learning basic game strategies, and participating in cooperative and competitive games.
  • Years 5 - 6: Developing advanced movement strategies, leadership in sports, and an understanding of health-related fitness concepts. Students also have opportunities for interschool sports, which enhance teamwork and sportsmanship.
Teaching Approach

Our program is built on active participation and enjoyment, ensuring that students remain engaged while developing important skills. Key elements of our approach include:

  • Game-Based Learning: Students learn skills in context through mini-games and structured activities, making lessons fun and dynamic.
  • Inclusive and Adaptable Activities: Lessons are designed to cater to all ability levels, ensuring every student feels confident and capable.
  • Teamwork and Sportsmanship: Activities encourage collaboration, respect, and fair play, helping students build strong social skills.
  • Health and Wellbeing Focus: Students develop an understanding of physical fitness, healthy habits, and emotional well-being through movement-based learning.
Engaging Students Beyond the Classroom

To keep students motivated and celebrate their achievements, our program includes:

  • Interschool Sports: Senior students compete in local sporting competitions, representing our school with pride.
  • School Events and House Competitions: Events like Athletics Day, Cross Country, and House Sports Days encourage participation and school spirit.
  • Recognition and Encouragement: We celebrate student progress and effort through awards, personal goal setting, and positive reinforcement.

Through our Physical Education program, students not only develop movement skills but also gain confidence, resilience, and a positive attitude toward an active lifestyle. We are proud to provide an engaging and supportive environment where all students can thrive.
