Our Engaging Performing Arts Program at Williamstown Primary
At Williamstown Primary, our Performing Arts program is designed to develop students' interest and understanding of the Performing Arts. Through engaging lessons and a broad range of activities, students are able to develop their creative and expressive capacities by learning about the different practices, disciplines and traditions of music, drama and dance.
Curriculum Overview
Our Performing Arts curriculum follows the Victorian Curriculum, ensuring that students progress through different achievement standards across their primary years. Over the course of 7 years, students engage in:
Music
- Listening to a wide range of music
- Learning about the elements of music i.e. duration, rhythm, dynamics, tempo, pitch and texture
- Creating, improvising and playing existing music
- Using tuned and untuned percussion instruments, keyboards, ukulele
- Presenting and/or performing their work
- Sharing their opinions and ideas about music and performance
Drama
- Learning about the elements of drama i.e. facial expression, voice, gesture, movement, reacting and levels
- Creating, improvising and interpreting scripts
- Role play and character work using props, costumes and puppets
- Self-expression and collaborative work with others
- Presenting and/or performing their work
- Sharing their opinions and ideas about music and performance
Dance
- Learning about the different traditions and cultures of dance
- Creating, improvising and learning existing dances
- Self-expression and collaborative work with others
- Presenting and/or performing their work
Teaching Approach

Engaging Students Beyond the Classroom
To keep students motivated and celebrate their achievements, our program includes:
- Choir: This is open to students in Year 1 - 6
- Marimba Band: Senior students are selected to participate and perform as part of a band
- Rock Band: Senior students are selected to participate and perform as part of a band
All three of these band programs are provided with opportunities throughout the year to perform to the school community and beyond
